More FAQ's

Q: Do I need to audition to come on the course?
A: No there is no audition, all are welcome!

Q: What will I learn if I come on the course?
A: On the course we will learn 2 new fun songs that are also new to Capital Connection. We will be covering correct singing techniques for singing in harmony, through singing craft sessions as well as through singing the course songs.

Q: Will it all be about boring singing exercises?
A: Absolutely not! We will all be learning together two fabulous songs arranged in four part harmony over the space of 6 weeks, together with singing craft to improve our voices. But of course in order to take proper care of our voices, we will be doing a vocal warmup at the start of the evening, so we are ready to sing at our best.

Q: Will the members of Capital Connection already know the songs?
A: Aside from the few people who will be helping to teach the songs, everyone will be receiving one of the songs in week 1, so you'll all be learning the song at the same time.

Q: How do I know which part to sing? Will I have to sing on my own?
A: No need to worry, we will do a simple exercise all together at the start of the course, that will help us decide together who is suited to which voice part - noone will be asked to sing on their own at any time during the course.

Q: I don't read music, will I be able to keep up?
A: Non-music readers are more than welcome, and audio learning mp3 tracks will be provided via a private web page, or on a physical CD if you need one, so that you can learn your part.  Many of the chorus don't read music so you won't stick out.  All singers will likely have to dedicate some time at home to learn the songs bit by bit, as there isn't enough time in rehearsal to do it all and learn them both from scratch! You will get more out of the experience if you have somewhat familiarised yourself with how your part goes.

Q: The last time I sang properly was years ago in the school choir, does that matter?
A: We welcome singers of all levels of experience, and if it's been that long, it's about time you rediscovered the joys of singing!

Q: My family tell me I sing out of tune, can you help and is this course for me?
A: As this is a harmony singing course, we do expect attendees to already be able to sing "ok", and in tune as a minimum requirement. Perhaps there is another singing-for-fun group or other hobby you could try...? 😃

Q: What if I enjoy it so much I don't want to stop singing?
A: There is absolutely no expectation or commitment for any attendee of the course to sing with the chorus long term, beyond the scope of the course. However if you decide that you would like to join the chorus as a permanent member, you will have plenty of opportunity to chat in our tea breaks to our current members about what is involved and expected of you in terms of commitment and time, and you can ask for an audition at the end of the course. There will also be a brief slot each week where the chorus will sing through a couple of their existing repertoire songs, so you can gauge if we'd be a good fit for you.

Q: I've decided I'm going to book to come on the course, what would I need to bring with me?
A: Just your enthusiastic, healthy self, a bottle of water for hydration and a pencil would be useful! All course learning materials will be provided.  Please do not bring your germs!  If you are feeling slightly under the weather you are welcome to come and "sit out" and learn by observation, however if you are unwell with something contagious or infectious we'd encourage you to stay home and not risk infecting other singers.

Q: If I know I can't come every week is that ok?
A: To gain full benefit from the course you should plan to ideally attend every week, but we understand that sometimes life gets in the way, or you may be unwell.

Q: If I can't attend some weeks or at all, will I get a refund?
A: You will get a full refund as long as you cancel your place and let us know at least 24 hours before the course starts in the first week and have already paid via eventbrite. Sorry but we cannot refund for individual weeks once you've started the course.

Q: Is there an age limit?
A: The course is open to all females between the ages of 16-70! (We regret that the upper age limit is necessary due to a limitation in our public liability insurance coverage.)

Q: Is it only for women?
A: Sorry, yes, this course is only for women (including trans women and those who identify as women, or who are female and identify as non-binary). If you are a man interested in harmony singing, you can visit Capital Chorus's website, or you can contact us and we will gladly point you towards some other local men's choruses who run similar events!

Q: Is it disabled-friendly?
A: The venue is wheelchair accessible and has a disabled toilet.  There are no barriers to disabled people for singing, however we ask that if you need a personal carer, that you bring someone with you (who will not be charged unless they are also taking part).

Do you have another question we haven't answered about, before you can decide if you want to come along? Please email us on sing@capitalconnection.org.uk and we'll be happy to help.
